Making a Coyote Linux
Bootable Floppy Firewall
Using just a 1.4MB floppy disk, you can have a firewall that does a good job protecting your LAN
against unwanted access from the Internet. With a CD-ROM, you can add literally hundreds of
tools for managing your firewall and keeping your network running smoothly.
A handful of bootable Linux firewall distributions are available today. The rest of this chapter steps
you through the setup of Coyote Linux (www.coyotelinux.com) and then describes a few others
that might interest you.
Coyote Linux Firewall is described here primarily as a demonstration of how small a
useful Linux system can be. If you like, you can even use Coyote Linux from a CD (see
http://rzero.com/coyote/bootcd.html). However, if the computer you plan to use for your
firewall has a CD drive, consider using a more feature-rich and up-to-date firewall distribution such
as Devil Linux (www.devil-linux.com).
