Follow these steps to add the Universe and Multiverse repositories to Synaptic Package Manager so
that you can use them to get additional Ubuntu software that simply might not be stable enough to
be part of the Ubuntu release:
1. From the Synaptic Package Manager main window, select Settings???Repositories. The
Software Sources window appears, displaying the software repositories that are active for
your system, as shown in Figure 17-6.
2. Select the Community-maintained Open Source software (Universe) or Software restricted
by copyright or legal issues (Multiverse) repositories to enable you to explore or install
software from them.

Add repositories to get software from Universe or outside the official distribution.
3. Click Close to close this dialog box and return to Synaptic. You will see a confirmation
dialog box, alerting you to update Synaptic??™s package list. Click OK.
4. Select Reload from the Synaptic Package Manager main window. Software from the added
repositories now appears in the list of software you can install in your system.
At this point, you can install any of the software that was added to your software list. Keep in
mind, however, that because software in the Universe and Multiverse repositories is not supported
by Ubuntu, it will not receive official patches or security updates from the Ubuntu development
team.
