Firefox is the default Ubuntu Web browser, and Pidgin (formerly known
as GAIM) is used for instant messaging. This menu also includes a Terminal Server Client
if you need to connect to Microsoft Windows Terminal servers (in the rare event that
you still need access to a Microsoft Windows system).
Office??”A full set of OpenOffice.org office productivity applications is included with
Ubuntu. Selections include OpenOffice.org Calc (spreadsheet), Draw (drawing and
flowcharts), Impress (presentations), Math (formulas and equations), and Writer (word
processing). OpenOffice.org Database lets you create and access a database.
Sound & Video??”Ubuntu provides a movie player, the Sound Juicer CD player and
ripper, the Rhythmbox Music Player for online audio, the Serpentine CD creator,
and the Sound Recorder audio recording application. Like other commercial Linux

distributions, Ubuntu doesn??™t include the software needed to play MP3 music out of
the box, but you can easily add these capabilities from the Ubuntu repositories.
The movie player included with Ubuntu (and other GNOME desktops) is the Totem
media player. Additional non??“open source codecs are needed to enable that video
player to play commercial DVD movies. Movie players such as Xine and MPlayer,
whose use requires codecs that cannot be freely distributed, are not included with
Ubuntu by default, but can be added through the Ubuntu repositories.
