Games??”Under the Games menu, you have a selection of about 17 GNOME games.
Some are similar to ones you would find on a Windows desktop (for example, Mines,
AisleRiot Solitaire, and FreeCell Solitaire). There are also Tetris-like games (Gnometris)
and board games (Mahjongg). You don??™t get any of the more demanding open source
games (such as Tux Racer) or networked games (such as the BZFlag networked tank
battle game), but these can easily be installed using the Synaptic Package Manager.
Graphics??”The Ubuntu desktop install includes the GIMP open source graphic
manipulation application. It also includes the F-Spot Photo Manager for managing
collections of digital photographs, and the gthumb Image Viewer. To import images
from a scanner, Ubuntu includes the XSame image scanning application. No document
viewers are included here, such as Evince (which can be used to view PostScript and
PDF files), but this, and the more traditional Adobe Acrobat viewer, can be installed
using Synaptic.
Internet??”Popular, standard open source Internet clients can be launched from this
menu. The Ekiga Softphone application enables you to make voice-over-IP phone calls
directly from your Ubuntu system. Evolution (a resource-intensive but full-featured
mail client and personal information manager) can be used for reading and managing
your e-mail.
