Trying Out the Desktop
With the latest GNOME interface, menus are available on the top panel. By default, you won??™t have
as many applications to choose from as you have with the default Fedora install, which should be
expected because Ubuntu comes on one rather than multiple CDs. However, the selection of desktop
applications that you have with Ubuntu is good.
The Applications menu offers the following categories of software:
Accessories??”From this menu, select some basic desktop utilities that are part of the
GNOME project. Choose Archive Manager to launch the File Roller application. File
Roller provides a simple GUI interface that is useful for backing up personal files in a
variety of archive and compression types. Text Editor starts the gedit graphical text editor
(so you don??™t have to use the unintuitive vi editor to edit plain text documents). To
go to a shell, you can launch the Terminal application from this menu. Other accessories
include a Calculator, Character Map (for mapping special keyboard characters), and
Dictionary.
