If
updates to your system are available, the Update Manager displays a message to this effect and provides
an icon at the right of the top panel that you can select to install those updates and keep your
system current. You will need to provide your password in order to perform this (or any other)
administrative operation. You can also check for updates manually at any time by selecting the
System???Administration???Update Manager menu item.

To add other software packages, you can open the Synaptic Package Manager Window (select
System???Administration???Synaptic Package Manager) or Add/Remove Applications window
(select System???Administration???Add/Remove Programs). Using Synaptic, you can add the software
you want individually. Software not available on the CD will be downloaded from the Internet
(provided you have an active Internet connection).
Starting with Ubuntu
On the surface, Ubuntu is not very different in appearance from other Linux desktop systems using
GNOME. Underneath, the tools for managing your software packages are the same as you would
expect with Debian systems. Many of the differences are subtle and do a lot to make using Linux
easier for the end user.
Log in using the username and password you entered during installation.
