You must define at least two partitions.
One partition is used as swap space, which is a special partition format that Linux systems
use for managing virtual memory. A second partition is used to hold the top-level
directory of your Ubuntu Linux installation, known as the root directory and mounted
as / on your Ubuntu system.
In the initial partitioning dialog box, you select the free disk space in which you want to
create a partition and click New, which displays a dialog box that enables you to graphically
size the partition by dragging its borders. In this dialog box, you also specify the
type of file system that you want to use on the partition, and whether it is a primary or
extended partition. You can have only four primary partitions on a single disk drive??”to
create more than four partitions on a single disk drive, one of the four primary partitions
must be defined as an extended partition, in which other (logical) partitions can then be
defined.
11. After dividing your disk into partitions, click Forward to proceed to a second dialog box,
in which you define where your primary and logical partitions should be mounted on
your Ubuntu system. Mounted partitions are associated with specific directories on an
Ubuntu system.
When you are done, click Forward to continue with the installation process.
