CD provides a separate installer for this type of server system, highlighting Ubuntu??™s awareness of
(and sensitivity) to the needs of its users, regardless of whether they are sitting in front of their
desktop computer system or are cloistered in a machine room somewhere.
Ubuntu Spin-Offs
Because no single CD set of software is going to please everyone, some spin-off projects have
already been created from Ubuntu. The following are three partner projects associated with
Ubuntu Linux:
Kubuntu (www.kubuntu.org)??”This project combines the latest version of the KDE
desktop with each desktop Ubuntu release. KDE replaces the GNOME desktop, which is
used by default with Ubuntu.
Xubuntu (www.xubuntu.org)??”This project blends the power and usability of Ubuntu
with the lightweight Xfce desktop system, delivering a full-featured Ubuntu system that
is less demanding of system and graphics resources. Xubuntu runs well on older or lesspowerful
systems, and is ideal for laptops.
Edubuntu (www.edubuntu.org)??”This project focuses on producing a version of
Ubuntu that is suitable for use in classrooms. Edubuntu combines Ubuntu with software
geared toward education (such as KDE Edutainment software) and software used for
creating inexpensive computer clusters (such as the Linux Terminal Server Project).
