Starting Gentoo Installation from a Live CD
Here are the minimum computer requirements for a Gentoo installation using the live CD procedure
described in this section:
 1.5GB of hard disk space
 256MB of RAM
 A 686 processor (or better) is recommended
 256MB of swap space
Boot the Gentoo live CD from the DVD that comes with the book as follows:
1. Insert the DVD. Insert the DVD that comes with this book. Then, restart the computer
and select to boot the Gentoo live CD image contained on that DVD. Log in as root with
no password when you see the login prompt. You can get a list of available kernels by
pressing F1 from the boot screen, shown in Figure 13-1.

2. Start the graphical installer. From icons on the desktop, you have a choice of starting a
graphical or text-based install. Then select either a standard or networkless install. If possible,
I recommend starting the graphical (GTK) install.
3. Click Forward.
