Live CD Install
The Gentoo live CD, included on this book??™s DVD, can be used to install a basic desktop system.
This CD is for x86 computer architectures. If you are installing for a different architecture, you can
find other live/install CDs from the ???Where to Get Gentoo Linux??? page (www.gentoo.org/main/
en/where.xml). Then follow the procedures in the section ???Starting Gentoo Installation from a
Live CD??? later in this chapter.
Minimal/Universal Install CD
To provide the full feel of installing Gentoo, you could begin with as little as a minimal disk image.
From a minimal install disk, you can download and compile most of the software you need (including
the kernel itself). To do this procedure, you need a broadband Internet connection (no dialup).
For architectures other than i686 and AMD64, there are also Universal and Package Gentoo
CDs that you can use without having a live Internet connection.
For the minimal install, begin with the following CD image: install-x86-minimal-2007.0.iso.
This bootable minimal install CD image (up to 130MB) includes just enough software to begin the
install procedure. This CD image is included on the CD that comes with this book, so you can
boot it directly from the CD. You can also find this image in any Gentoo mirror site (in the
releases/x86/2007.
