invites uncertainty regarding the functionality. Using an explicit label on the button, like ???Log In,???
better defines the action.
A survey of company sites
Since the bulk of business websites are small and do not require the incalculable amount
of content juggling that corporations like IBM manage on a daily basis, the majority of this
book??™s audience is comprised of small to medium-sized businesses. While general concepts
and development practices are applicable to just about anyone, working through the
detailed nuances of a site design requires particular attention to the unique ways a company
markets itself in its sector. This is particularly true in regard to the homepage design.
To offer a broad overview of how small and medium-sized businesses present themselves,
part of this book??™s research involved studying the homepages of 200 small companies.
These companies represent a diverse set of industries, from staffing services to coffee
shops to technology consultancies. Most were purely brochure sites, although a few incorporated
e-commerce.
