Of course, designing a homepage with only the critical elements just mentioned will leave
a fairly empty layout, so the important work comes in deciding what additional content
will provide the most value to both first-time and returning visitors. The common cardinal
sin is overloading users with information, but leaving them malnourished and craving sustenance
is equally unfavorable.
Since every company has its own unique set of priorities and business goals, the following
is suggested content only. Each component tackles a certain business angle??”none are
required, but any could be used. Configuring the design to maximize the impact of the
homepage may not be an exercise in just puzzle-solving, but in trial and error as well.
The billboard
Many company websites feature a front-page billboard that is used to advertise and promote
whatever piece of news, service, product, or sale is most important to the business
at the time. The billboard is usually a graphic or animated Flash file, and is commonly
large, bold, and focused on directing traffic to a specific area inside the site. Many companies
treat them like miniature television commercials, and allocate large production budgets.
