5 THE HOMEPAGE
A few years ago I attended a conference in Salt Lake City. Having never been there and
being naive in my younger days, I immediately assumed the convention center would be
little more than a low-framed box jammed between a few high-rise buildings downtown.
But arriving on the first day in a swirl of early November snow, I was awed by the beautiful
steel and glass tower that crowned the building??™s main entrance. The circular construct
rose several stories into the air and housed a series of wooden pipes whose calculated
tones kept careful track of passing hours before large glass doors opened into a quiet,
spacious lobby. Suddenly, the fact that I was in the middle of the Rocky Mountains in a late
fall snow became far less interesting than the engaging convention space.
