"Web Design and Marketing Solutions for Business Websites"

In addition
to traditional HTML-based site maps, which have no common specification, Google, Yahoo,
and Microsoft all recognize a common XML-based site map protocol that is designed to
aid search engines in accurately indexing a domain.13 These files generally exist in the root
directory of the web server and follow a simple format:

http://www.yourbusiness.com/
2006-11-01
daily
0.8

These simple XML files provide a list of the site??™s URLs and include a bit of metadata about
each. This meta information includes the following:
Last modified date: This is when the actual page was last changed. The formatting
uses W3C Datetime.14
Update frequency: This is a hint to search engines on how often the content of the
page is updated; possible values include always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly,
yearly, and never.
Priority level: This is a ranking from 0.0 to 1.0 (the default is 0.5) that allows the
developer to classify the relative importance of pages within the site.
