Accessibility benefits everyone
It is probably true that the majority of a corporation??™s website visitors will have passable
vision, no significant learning disabilities, and not suffer from epilepsy. It??™s even common
for businesses to think people with those inhibitions will never visit their site because
???that??™s not our target audience.??? But remember that a target audience is not the only audience,
and disabilities are more common than most believe (remember, about 32 million in
the United States alone). Beyond designing for that significant slice of the population,
there are many reasons to consider accessibility in a corporate web project.
Keep the doors open
Imagine visiting a store where every tenth person was refused entry. Imagine that of those
that got in, some were not allowed to look at the merchandise??”and of those that could,
only a certain number could understand the complex checkout process to even buy anything.
If brick-and-mortar stores operated like web stores, there would be a lot of momand-
pops out of business.
A corporate website is no different. Keeping the doors open for all visitors??”even if all that
is being sold is information about the company??”only helps people find what they are
looking for.
