"Manage Software Testing"

??? Senior testers to work as business analysts or technical writers.
??? Test managers to work as project managers.
??? Testers to work as second-line help-desk Support staff and vice versa.
In practice good testers have so much fun testing that they are often reluctant to move. If testing is ever
seen as a repository for poor programmers then you have a big problem.

9.7 Relations
Relations with other staff are conditioned by a company??™s culture. Here are some indicators of cultures
best avoided but, if you have no choice, treated with caution: 4
??? In organizations with few rules inherent in the job, few established routines, where a project
manager can approve non-routine decisions, and ride roughshod over developer??™s calls for clear
specifications, and design tools, and time without fear of being criticized, a test manager will soon
find that only a disaster will curb such behavior, and will ensure he cannot be seen to have been
responsible for that disaster.
??? In organizations with few rewards for reliability and predictability, and many rewards for unusual
performance/innovation, crises are encouraged as a way of seeking both attention and extra
rewards. Project managers will exploit this by working late hours, and expecting development and
test staff to do likewise. Get the time sheets and work out the cost of all that overtime first if you
want to change such things.
