"Manage Software Testing"

The Test Team and Its Context
173
??? Has a
low paranoia liability
: he will get paranoid anyway, but as Ronald Reagan famously
observed: ???
I get so worried I??™m beginning to have sleepless afternoons
.???
??? Is
prepared to admit defeat
: At some point he must (be prepared to) concede that the system
isn??™t too bad and can be released.
??? Is
able to philosophize
: a good test manager must always be a philosopher king
manqu?©
. He will
be unhappy if he cannot relate events and phenomena somehow.
??? Is
able to stand back
from the fray: there are always bugs, triumphs, and catastrophes. So what?
What does this mean for the customers, the company, the share price, the project, and the test
team? A test manager must have a sufficient sense of balance that he can evaluate events without
undue pessimism (which is a natural tendency of all successful test managers).
??? Is
able to get to the thick of the fray
: all test managers must have a slight hankering to test
something. It??™s what gives them an edge. The good test managers can mostly resist this until
crises strike.
???
Has been a tester
: You cannot understand a tester??™s motivations and values if you don??™t bear the scars.
9.1.2 The Testers
Testers are:
???
Literate
:
they have no difficulty reading or writing. They??™ll have to do both. They can spot a split
infinitive two paragraphs away and they do.
???
Numerate
:
they don??™t have to know calculus but it would be nice.
