"The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS): Session Control and Other Network Operations"

com is a
public user identity in the form of a TEL URI).
The public user identity can also be an e-mail address (such as travis.russell@tekelec
.com), or any other form of SIP URI, and is stored on the device. The device stores identities
in an application that resides on the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC).
Look inside any GSM phone and you will find a tiny circuit card that inserts into the
phone (commonly referred to as the Subscriber Identity Module, or SIM).
If there is no public user identity provided, the network then uses the IMSI in the
same form it did for the private user identity. The IMSI form is not used for human
consumption. It is only used by the network to determine how to route the call to the
home network and reach the HSS. The public (and private) user identities are then
learned from the HSS. The IMSI form would take the form of:
sip:imsi@mnc.mcc.3gppnetwork.org
The IP address for the device is assigned dynamically, by the network provider the
device is connecting with. When the device is activated, the device is given an IP address
by the network, which it then stores in memory. This IP address is then sent along
with the public and private user identities to the serving S-CSCF for storing during the
registration process. The S-CSCF sends this information to the HSS, where it is also
stored for the duration of the registration.
