100 Chapter 4
This private identity is not advertised outside of the home network and is not visible
to the end user. It is used within the home network only and usually consists of the subscription
identity and possibly an account number. It identifies the subscription itself
and is associated with at least one, but most likely several public user identities.
Whenever a subscriber registers in the network (by activating his or her phone for
example), the device must send the private user identity, which is embedded within the
device (usually in a SIM card). The device also sends the IP address it was assigned
when it connected to the network. Only one private user identity can be stored in the
device (however, a device and private user identity may have multiple public user identities
associated with it).
The private user identity is assigned one time when a subscriber starts an account
with the service provider. It is stored in the service providers Home Subscriber Server
(HSS) along with a profile of services subscribed to, and current registration information.
The only time a private user identity is authenticated is during registration.
Public User Identity The public user identity is used for routing. This is the identity
subscribers use to advertise how they can be reached. A telephone number in the form
of a URI is considered a public user identity (for example, +9193681397@tcg.
