Addressing in the IMS 95
this no longer makes sense in the IP world. There are much better ways to reach users
in today??™s modern networks.
To accommodate addressing within the Internet, the concept of Universal Resource
Identifiers (URIs) were established. This is the form of identity used within the IMS as
well. Subscribers no longer have numbers identifying them within the network. These
URIs serve as their identities in the same fashion as e-mail addresses today.
SIP Identities in the IMS
Perhaps the most important aspect of the IMS (or any other service network for that
matter) is the identity of its users. Our identities are what enable us to communicate
freely with other network users, and how we advertise to others how to reach us. But
aside from reaching users, identities are important to the network provider as well.
Without the ability to identify users, there is no ability to identify usage and apply
billing, by which operators earn their revenues. There is no way to ensure the subscriber
accessing your network is authorized to use the services you offer. Identity is
important for billing and accounting, security, and even marketing intelligence.
SIP and the IMS can only identify a subscription, since there is no means to identify
and authenticate the actual person or persons using the identity (short of some
biometrics on the access device authenticating the person).
